Why referral traffic is incomplete
When someone arrives from an AI assistant, I want to know what they do next, not just count the visit. Some AI-assisted journeys produce a recognizable referral. Others end without a click, open in an app that strips referral information, or influence a later direct visit. Referral sessions are useful, but they are not a complete measure of AI visibility or commercial influence.
Google reports traffic from AI features within normal Search Console performance data rather than a separate AI channel. That is another reason to combine sources instead of searching for one definitive dashboard.
Build a five-part scorecard
- Technical availability: indexed priority pages, crawl errors and verified crawler activity by URL. A user-agent string alone is not proof of a crawler’s identity; verify official IP ranges where available.
- Answer inclusion: how often the brand appears across a fixed set of buyer prompts.
- Answer quality: accuracy, recommendation context, cited sources and competitor share.
- Traffic and behavior: identifiable AI referrals, engaged sessions, key pages and conversion events.
- Business outcome: qualified inquiries, conversion and revenue where attribution is supportable. Keep recorded referrals, customer-reported influence and estimates separate.
Keep the layers separate. A rise in crawler activity does not prove recommendation. A rise in prompt inclusion does not prove leads. The scorecard shows where the chain is strengthening or breaking.
Create a controlled prompt baseline
Choose prompts representing discovery, comparison, risk and action. Repeat prompts using fresh sessions and consistent settings, recording location, account state and personalization where possible. A few repeats help reveal variation; they do not establish a precise visibility rate. Record the date, platform, model or mode when visible, result, citations and named competitors.
I use this as a directional check, not proof of how every customer sees the business. Its value comes from consistent conditions and documented change over time.
Capture lead source
Where it makes sense, give customers an optional way to say how they heard about the business. Do not add required fields that make buying or contacting you harder. Include ChatGPT or another AI assistant as a choice. Store the landing page, campaign parameters and referrer when available.
Qualitative evidence matters. A qualified buyer explicitly saying “ChatGPT recommended you” can be more commercially meaningful than a large volume of low-intent referral sessions.
Report uncertainty honestly
Do not relabel all direct traffic as AI influence. Do not claim a citation caused revenue without supporting evidence. Report known referrals, self-reported influence and modeled assumptions separately.
Say what you know, what you're estimating, and which is which.
