The challenge
Enterprise commerce migrations are often described as technology programs. In practice, they require decisions about customer journeys, merchandising, search, content, analytics, integrations, operating processes, organizational ownership and the commercial roadmap.
My role
In my former enterprise role, I led the business side of an enterprise commerce-platform migration to Salesforce Commerce Cloud. That meant connecting the platform program to customer and commercial priorities while coordinating across internal teams, executive stakeholders and external partners.
What the work required
- Clarifying the business outcomes the platform needed to enable.
- Balancing platform adoption, integrations and necessary customization.
- Connecting ecommerce requirements to inventory, pricing, financing, fulfillment and store experiences.
- Preparing teams and operating processes for a different platform model.
- Maintaining executive visibility into decisions, risks, dependencies and progress.
Lessons from leading the migration
A replatform is not complete when code is deployed. Value comes from the organization’s ability to operate the platform, improve the customer experience, use the data, prioritize the roadmap and reliably deliver the promises made online.
What transfers to other companies
Decide who owns what on the business side before the integrator starts. Customize only where it actually sets you apart.
